Featured as our Product of the Month for May, we have the incredible ‘The Longest Reigning Monarchs Milestone Jubilees 1897 and 2022 Silver Set’. This set brings together the official British silver medal for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee with the official British silver 50p coin for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.
The year 2022 not only celebrates the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the first such jubilee in British History, but also the celebration of our second-longest reigning monarch’s Diamond Jubilee; Queen Victoria’s. This royal jubilee took place in 1897, a celebration for a remarkable sixty years of reign, marking 2022 as the 125th anniversary.
There were no commemorative coins produced for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, however, a commemorative medal was produced. Featured in this set we have the silver medal, measuring at 26mm diameter. On one side there is the Queen Victoria ‘Veiled Head’ portrait, and on the other is the acclaimed ‘Young Head’ portrait designed by William Wyon. These medals were similar in size to the florin coin, and so were often circulated as coinage, meaning that they can be scarce to find today.
Britain has produced a special 50p coin in commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II and her Platinum Jubilee, the first 50p coin ever to commemorate a royal event. The reverse features a large number ’70’ with the royal cypher inside the zero. On the obverse there is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, but not with her usual side profile, instead it is a portrait of her on horseback; the so-called Equestrian Portrait. This portrait is a tradition observed for some of the commemorative coins for her previous royal jubilees, and to the original silver crown coin of King Edward VI in 1551.
These two silver commemoratives come together to celebrate our two longest reigning monarchs in a celebration of their Diamond and Platinum Jubilees respectively. The 1897 medal is in selected condition, Grade 7. The 2022 50p coin is the solid sterling silver version, in Proof quality. The mintage limitation for this is only 7,605 coins.
