This will be an historic year in British royal history. Not only do we celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, in honour of her 70 years, but we also mark the 125th Anniversary of the Diamond Jubilee of her great great grandmother, Queen Victoria! Two of the longest reigning monarchs, the impact that both of these women’s reigns have had on British society has been profound. Victoria presided over huge industrial change and expansion of the empire; Elizabeth’s reign has taken us into a whole new era of technological supremacy.
To celebrate these major commemorations for both Queens, a new series of sovereign coins has been produced to commemorate the 60-year diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign. Introducing The 2022 Queen Victoria 125th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Gold Sovereign Range, and in particular, the one-eighth sovereign…
What makes these coins so significant is that they are the first sovereign coins ever to be diamond shaped, in tribute to Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Coins are rarely struck in any shape other than circular, but Queen Victoria is a monarch of such importance in British royal history that something truly special has been authorised to mark this anniversary of her Diamond Jubilee. This new series of sovereign coins stands apart from all others, a unique tribute to one of Britain’s most remarkable monarchs.
Also, each coin features a new adaptation of one of Queen Victoria’s original coinage portraits, making this diamond shaped series incredibly attractive and exciting. These nineteenth century portraits of Victoria look superb with the improvements brought by twenty-first century technology in die-engraving. Every coin in this series depicts our two longest reigning monarchs: Victoria on the reverse side and Elizabeth II on the obverse. The fact that our own monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, appears on this coin creates an incredible historical link between our two longest reigning monarchs.
It doesn’t just stop there either, what is also incredible about this range is that many of the portraits are appearing on coins that they have never been seen on before. Take for example the one-eighth sovereign; one of the most remarkable of the coins in this diamond shaped series. This is a sovereign denomination that was never struck during Victoria’s reign, therefore, it is the first coin of its kind ever to feature Queen Victoria!
The one-eighth sovereign’s design is an adaptation of the celebrated ‘Young Portrait’ of Queen Victoria by William Wyon. This portrait was of such quality that it was used for almost fifty years, by which time the Queen herself was almost seventy, giving it the distinction of being the longest used royal portrait in British coinage history.
