A New Generation of Coin Enthusiasts

Coin Collecting

The passing of Queen Elizabeth II has marked the biggest change in public life that the majority of people have ever encountered. New coins bearing the portrait of King Charles III have now entered circulation and alongside those of his mother; the first time in two generations that there have been coins with two different monarchs in circulation.

Living through this significant moment of history will spark new interests for some, and Peter Hutchison, heritage British coin expert, has given his view on a new generation of coin enthusiasts…

Although Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait will continue in circulation for many years to come, Peter has noticed a new wave of interest emerging since her death, with both novice and seasoned coin enthusiasts alike trying to get their hands on the most scarce royal gold coins and notes featuring her portrait.

Why has the demand for coin collecting increased?

He said: “Although it’s been an immensely sad time for many, this significant period of change has prompted a new rush of interest from those new to coins and currency collecting, who have been keen to get their hands on rare-issue coins and banknotes. For them, it’s been their own way of commemorating the death of Her Late Majesty.

“It’s been remarkable actually, and I think the new coins depicting King Charles being revealed has only ramped up that appetite more. It’s a momentous time – it’s certainly the most dramatic change most of us have seen in our lifetimes.

“The reason it’s such a huge deal is the fact that for such a long time now there’s only been one monarch on our currency, there haven’t been any others in circulation during this time, which emphasises just how long Queen Elizabeth II was head of state.”

Peter says that demand has been “vast” from both novice and seasoned coin enthusiasts alike in recent weeks, with many eager to obtain any Queen Elizabeth coin released during her reign.
