Featured as our Product of the Month for September, we have the incredible King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Firsts Coin Set of 1953 and 2022, which features the first commemorative coins of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III!
Our new King’s first coin pays tribute to the first crown coin of his predecessor and mother. This set brings two coins together in a son’s tribute to his mother: the 1953 Queen Elizabeth II Coronation five shilling crown, and the 2022 King Charles III fifty pence.
The very first British coin of King Charles III to enter circulation is a seven-sided fifty pence coin with a design that’s identical to the first commemorative coin of his predecessor, and mother, Queen Elizabeth II. In fact, it’s the ONLY coin of King Charles III presently in circulation in Britain, although with only 5 million released, they are very difficult to come by.
The new coin, which features a portrait of King Charles III on the obverse, has on the reverse the four shields of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This very same design featured on his mother’s Coronation Crown coin of 1953, which was the first commemorative coin of her reign too!
At the start of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, the crown had already fallen out of circulation but was issued in 1953 as a commemorative piece. This crown features an ‘Equestrian Portrait’ of Queen Elizabeth II on horseback, rather than the usual facial profile, designed by Gilbert Ledward. This is the first of only four occasions (1953, 1977, 2002, 2022) on which Queen Elizabeth II has been depicted this way on our coinage.
Therefore, contained in this remarkable set is the first commemorative coin of Queen Elizabeth II, and the first commemorative of King Charles III, with the same design, one in tribute to the other!
The 1953 crown is cupro-nickel and in near Uncirculated quality, while the 2022 Fifty Pence coin is solid Sterling silver and minted to Proof quality standards.
