Description

The first solid 22 carat gold sovereigns of their kind to commemorate the Battle of the Somme, incorporating genuine silver from original British coins minted in 1916.

In 2026, we mark the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the most devastating battles of the First World War. Fought from 1st July to 18th November 1916, the Somme came at an enormous human cost, with more than one million men killed, wounded or captured.

To honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served, an exceptional new range of gold sovereigns has been created, incorporating genuine heritage silver recovered from original British coins minted in 1916, the very year of the battle.

Now, you have the opportunity to secure The 2026 Battle of the Somme Gold Sovereign Superior Set, bringing together four remarkable sovereign denominations in one exceptional collection.

What makes this set so special?

  • A remarkable world first: The first sovereigns of their kind to commemorate the Battle of the Somme by incorporating silver recovered from original British coins minted in 1916, creating a tangible connection to the year of the battle.
  • Struck in solid 22 carat gold: Each coin contains 91.67% pure gold, with at least 1% heritage silver from 1916 incorporated into the alloy.
  • Four distinctive medal designs: The One Tenth, One Eighth, Quarter and Half Sovereigns each feature a different First World War medal, honouring the courage and service of those who fought.
  • Exclusive denominations: The One Eighth and Quarter Sovereigns are not available to purchase individually, making this set a special opportunity to secure both coins.
  • Luxury presentation: All four sovereigns are housed together in an elegant presentation box, creating a fitting tribute to one of the most significant battles in British military history.
Four remarkable coins honouring the heroes of the Somme

Each coin features a striking battlefield scene, with barbed wire and a shattered tree stump representing the devastation of the Somme.  In the foreground of each design is a different First World War medal, giving every denomination its own distinctive historical significance.

The One Tenth Sovereign features the British War Medal 1914–1918, affectionately nicknamed ‘Squeak’, awarded to qualifying servicemen during the First World War.

The One Eighth Sovereign depicts the 1914–15 Star, known as ‘Pip’, awarded to qualifying servicemen who served overseas during the early years of the war.

The Quarter Sovereign features the Victory Medal, nicknamed ‘Wilfred’, awarded to qualifying personnel for service during the First World War.

The Half Sovereign depicts the Military Medal, instituted in 1916 and awarded for acts of bravery in the field.

Together, these four designs form a poignant tribute to the men who served and sacrificed during one of the most significant battles of the First World War.

Genuine silver from 1916, a tangible connection to history

What makes these sovereigns particularly remarkable is not simply their design, but the precious metals from which they have been struck.

Traditionally, sovereigns contain 22 carats of gold, with the remaining two carats consisting of other metals to strengthen the coin.

For this anniversary collection, that alloy incorporates at least 1% genuine silver recovered from original British coins minted in 1916.

This creates an extraordinary physical connection to the year of the Battle of the Somme, bringing together historic silver and precious gold in a lasting tribute to those who served.

Four sovereigns, one exceptional presentation

The Superior Set brings together all four denominations in a beautifully crafted luxury presentation box, allowing each of the distinctive medal designs to be displayed together.

With the One Eighth and Quarter Sovereigns available exclusively as part of a set, this is a special opportunity to secure all four coins in one remarkable collection.

Benefit from the SELL OUT GUARANTEE

Sell Out Guarantee

The 2026 Battle of the Somme Superior Sovereign Set will not exceed 999 sets and is also subject to our new SELL OUT GUARANTEE. What this means is that availability of this set will end on 28th February 2027. At that time, any sets that are unsold will be melted down and verified to that effect.

At that point, we will issue to owners of this set a new certificate stating the final mintage which may be lower, or possibly considerably lower, than 999. If the mintage remains at 999 then this means the set sold out entirely to keen customers, and if not, you may have secured for yourself a low mintage rarity.

Either way, there will be little or no surplus of this set on the secondary market and so the set you own will be a rarity!
