Description

The first solid 22 carat gold sovereigns of their kind to commemorate the Battle of the Somme, incorporating genuine silver from original British coins minted in 1916.

In 2026, we mark the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the most devastating battles of the First World War. Fought from 1st July to 18th November 1916, the Somme came at an enormous human cost, with more than one million men killed, wounded or captured.

To honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served, an exceptional new range of gold sovereigns has been created, incorporating genuine heritage silver recovered from original British coins minted in 1916, the very year of the battle.

Now, you have the opportunity to secure The 2026 Battle of the Somme Gold Sovereign Prestige Set, bringing together three remarkable sovereign denominations in one exceptional collection.

What makes this set so special?
  • A remarkable world first: The first sovereigns of their kind to commemorate the Battle of the Somme by incorporating silver recovered from original British coins minted in 1916, creating a tangible connection to the year of the battle.
  • Struck in solid 22 carat gold: Each coin contains 91.67% pure gold, with at least 1% genuine heritage silver from 1916 incorporated into the alloy.
  • Three historic medal designs: The One Tenth, One Eighth and Quarter Sovereigns each feature a different First World War medal, bringing together the famous trio affectionately known as ‘Pip, Squeak and Wilfred’.
  • Exclusive denominations: The One Eighth and Quarter Sovereigns are not available to purchase individually, making this set a special opportunity to secure both coins.
  • Luxury presentation: All three sovereigns are housed together in an elegant presentation box, creating a fitting tribute to one of the most significant battles in British military history.
Three historic medals reunited in solid gold

Each coin features a striking battlefield scene, with barbed wire and a shattered tree stump representing the devastation of the Somme.

In the foreground of each design is a representation of a different First World War medal, giving every denomination its own distinctive historical significance.

The One Tenth Sovereign features the British War Medal 1914–1918, affectionately nicknamed ‘Squeak’, awarded to qualifying servicemen during the First World War.

The One Eighth Sovereign depicts the 1914–15 Star, known as ‘Pip’, awarded to qualifying servicemen who served overseas during the early years of the war.

The Quarter Sovereign features the Victory Medal, nicknamed ‘Wilfred’, awarded to qualifying personnel for service during the First World War.

Together, these three medals became known as ‘Pip, Squeak and Wilfred’, a nickname inspired by a popular newspaper comic strip of the time.

For generations, families across Britain have treasured these medals as reminders of relatives who served during the First World War. Now, their designs are brought together in one remarkable collection of solid gold sovereigns, honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who fought.

Genuine silver from 1916, a tangible connection to history

What makes these sovereigns particularly remarkable is not simply their design, but the precious metals from which they have been struck.

Traditionally, sovereigns contain 22 carats of gold, with the remaining two carats consisting of other metals to strengthen the coin. For this historic anniversary collection, that alloy incorporates at least 1% genuine silver recovered from original British coins minted in 1916. This creates an extraordinary physical connection to the year of the Battle of the Somme, bringing together historic silver and precious gold in a lasting tribute to those who served.

More than a century after the guns fell silent, these exceptional gold sovereigns preserve a tangible link to 1916, commemorating the courage, sacrifice and resilience of those who fought.

Three sovereigns, one exceptional presentation

The Prestige Set brings together the One Tenth, One Eighth and Quarter Sovereigns in a beautifully crafted luxury presentation box, allowing the three famous First World War medal designs to be displayed together.

With the One Eighth and Quarter Sovereigns available exclusively as part of a set, this is a special opportunity to secure all three denominations in one remarkable collection.

Sell Out Guarantee

The 2026 Battle of the Somme Prestige Sovereign Set will not exceed 1,598 sets and is also subject to our new SELL OUT GUARANTEE. What this means is that availability of this set will end on 28th February 2027. At that time, any sets that are unsold will be melted down and verified to that effect.

At that point, we will issue to owners of this set a new certificate stating the final mintage which may be lower, or possibly considerably lower, than 1,598. If the mintage remains at 1,598 then this means the set sold out entirely to keen customers, and if not, you may have secured for yourself a low mintage rarity.
