Following the death of Her Late Majesty, demand for any Queen Elizabeth coin has surged, and the greater accessibility brought by the internet means enthusiasts no longer have to travel the length and breadth of the country to attend special events and fairs.
Is the hobby of coin collecting becoming more mainstream? We spoke with heritage British coin expert Peter Hutchison who advised that there has never been a more interesting time to become a coin enthusiast than now…
Who is buying gold coins in the UK?
“Gone are the days of the clipboard-wielding, fair attending, anorak-wearing type, that many associate with coin collecting,” he said. “Today, enthusiasts are all ages and come from all walks of life – and that is down to a number of factors – from the public’s fascination with the British Royal Family to the fact that rare and collectable coins are now available from a range of trusted, online companies and sellers, including Hattons of London.”
Peter says coin collecting, especially royal gold coins, is an immensely rewarding hobby. He says: “Rare coins bring enjoyment for a number of reasons. For many, it’s the satisfaction of owning small, intricately designed pieces of art, that are produced in a precious metal, typically gold. While for others, it’s learning about the history behind the coins, which might see enthusiasts start immersing themselves in history books to learn more about royals, politics, milestone events, or the interesting characters behind the coin. I know that some enthusiasts take great pleasure in knowing that they plan to pass down their coins on to their children and grandchildren, encouraging them to further enjoy – and potentially increase the collection they’ve lovingly created.”
Another appealing factor of building up a collection is the potential for it to grow in value down the line. “Although not everyone collects coins as an investment, some people have it at the back of their mind, especially if their collection includes some particularly rare and highly sought-after finds, as these particular coins may end up increasing in value”.
Hattons of London Buy Back Offers
He also mentioned our buy back offers, which are particularly appealing to those who are drawn to the investment that the hobby brings. “As Hattons of London specialises in rare and exclusive coins, often this means that coins sell out extremely quickly, which is great news for those who manage to get their hands on them but frustrating for those who miss out. To help with this, we run regular buy back offers where we attempt to persuade existing clients to sell specific coins back to us, at a premium, to satisfy demand elsewhere. I know that option is attractive to many enthusiasts.”
