This set pairs the most famous stamp in the world with what many consider the most beautiful coin ever struck in Britain. One is Victorian innovation, the other Victorian artistry — and between them they capture an age that was remaking both how the country worked and how it wanted to look.
VICTORIAN ERA ORIGINALS
Both pieces in this set are period originals. The stamp was printed in 1840 and passed through the Victorian postal system; the coin was struck by the Royal Mint between 1851 and 1887 and circulated in Victorian Britain. Neither is a reproduction, a replica or a modern commemorative struck to look old — these are the actual objects, handled by the people who lived through the age that made them. It is worth saying plainly, because so much Victorian-themed material on the market today is modern work in period dress. What is in this case is not.
VICTORIA AND HER AGE
Victoria came to the throne in June 1837, aged eighteen, and reigned for sixty-three years — longer than any British monarch before her. Her accession coincided almost exactly with the arrival of the railway age, and the Britain she inherited was transformed within a generation: steam, industry, empire, and a population on the move.
The Penny Black belongs to the very start of that reign; the florin may come from any point across the Gothic series, which ran from 1851 to 1887 and so spans the middle decades of the Victorian age.
2026 marks 125 years since her death.
Both pieces carry a portrait of Victoria engraved by the same hand: William Wyon, Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint. He designed the obverse portrait used on the Gothic florin, and it was his 1837 City of London medal that gave the Heath brothers the profile they engraved for the Penny Black.
The reverse of the florin is generally attributed to the painter William Dyce and engraved by Wyon, showing four crowned shields of the royal arms arranged as a cross, with the rose, thistle and shamrock in the angles.
The set is housed in a fine wooden presentation case with a certificate of authenticity.
