Description
History is made: four British kings on gold sovereign coins for the first time ever, marking the 90th anniversary of the Year of Three Kings in 1936
In 2026, we mark the 90th anniversary of the historic Year of Three Kings with the release of a remarkable new sovereign collection featuring, for the first time in history, the portraits of four different British kings.
The reverse design bears the portraits of King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI – the three kings of 1936 – while the obverse features the portrait of King Charles III. Both designs are the work of acclaimed coin artist Jody Clark, making this the first occasion on which all four monarchs have appeared together in a single sovereign series created entirely by the same artist.
The inclusion of King Edward VIII is especially significant. Following his abdication after just 326 days on the throne, no coins bearing his portrait were ever released during his reign. These new sovereigns therefore make it possible, for the first time, to own gold coins depicting Edward VIII and to see him placed alongside both his father and his brother, together with our present monarch, in one historic collection.
This anniversary carries a unique historical distinction. Every previous major anniversary of the Year of Three Kings, from the 10th through to the 80th, occurred during the reign of either King George VI or Queen Elizabeth II. Only now, in 2026, during the reign of King Charles III, can the anniversary be commemorated with the portrait of a fourth king.
The events of 1936 brought the monarchy closer to crisis than many realised at the time. This six-coin Definitive Set, comprising the one-tenth sovereign, the one-eighth, quarter, half, full and double sovereign coins, is a lasting tribute to one of the defining moments in the story of the modern British monarchy.
Authorised by Tristan Da Cunha and approved by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and , it is a wonderful way to mark the 90th anniversary.
The Definitive set comes in a luxury presentation case with a numbered plaque and certificate. You will be allocated the lowest number available.
