Description

A world first design to mark Remembrance in 2025 – a lasting and valuable symbol of respect for all who have served our nation.

This year has been quite poignant in terms of Remembrance as we mark 80 years since both V.E. Day and V.J. Day. These two dates marked the end of war against Nazi Germany in Europe, followed by the end of the war against Japan, which brought an end to six devastating years. At a time when conflicts around the world seem ever-present, the need for serious reflection is all the greater. Remembrance Day is a time to recognise the service of all those who have served this nation, in all conflicts, and to honour their stories with meaningful commemoration.

Now, to honour the courage and sacrifice of all those who served to protect the freedoms we enjoy today, a new series of gold sovereign coins has been released. Its design features an elegant rendition of winged Victory, a symbol of both triumph and remembrance.

These coins are likely to have wide appeal: just about every family up and down the country has someone, or knows someone, whose bravery and courage they’d like to remember, and these coins are a lasting and valuable symbol of that remembrance.

The coins themselves are also important as Victory has never appeared on gold sovereign coins before – these are world firsts – which is sure to give them added appeal. In addition to this, mintages of the quarter sovereign, half sovereign and sovereign are all well below 1,000, making them among the rarest of their kind, and this is likely to mean they will be keenly contested!

Here is a snapshot of the benefits:

  1. This is the first time that winged Victory has featured on gold sovereign coins. The Roman figure of Victory has, through the centuries, transformed from being a symbol of conquest, to today, when she symbolises also the understanding of the human cost of such triumph. This graceful design embodies both triumph over tyranny, and the remembrance of sacrifice.
  2. The use of Victory is appropriate this year, produced as it is in the 80th anniversary year of both of V.E. Day (8th May 1945) and V.J. Day (15th August 1945).
  3. This year’s 80th anniversary commemorations are important as only a small number of veterans from World War Two remain: in only a matter of years, their experiences will slip from living memory. These sovereign coins are an important tribute to these veterans, but also all who have served our nation, in many conflicts, both the fallen and the living.

Authorised by Tristan Da Cunha  and approved by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Buckingham Palace, it is a wonderful way to mark Remembrance in 2025 – a lasting and valuable symbol of respect for all who have served our nation.
