The 2021 Diana 60th Birthday Gold One-Eighth Sovereign, the first ever to feature Diana, Princess of Wales
This year would have marked the 60th birthday of Princess Diana, the ‘People’s Princess’ whose combined beauty and compassion won the hearts of an adoring public. She was only part of the Royal Family for a relatively short time, but in those years she quickly forged a valuable and modern role for herself. The influence of the changes she made continues to be felt even today, many years after her sudden and very tragic death.
Millions still cherish the memory of Diana Princess of Wales, which is why this year’s commemoration is so poignant.
To celebrate her life and legacy, in what would have been her 60th birthday year, a new gold one-eighth sovereign coin has been struck. This coin features the portrait of Diana on the reverse side in a demure pose – one that often belied her inner strength and tenacity in achieving what she wanted to for the many worthy causes she supported!
What may surprise you to learn is that Diana has never before appeared on gold sovereign coins! That makes this new release a significant one in the history of the sovereign itself. It’s hard to imagine that Diana would not, at some stage, have featured on a gold sovereign, but the reality is that she was only a ‘royal’ for around sixteen years, and in that time there was only one commemorative sovereign series minted!
As a cultural icon and an inspiration to many for her humanitarian work, it’s important that her legacy lives on for future generations. And now, in what would have been her 60th year, we have the opportunity to ‘right this wrong’ and pay tribute to her life and memory with a sovereign that is a world-first of it’s kind!
Diana’s portrait appears on a gold one-eighth sovereign for the first time ever!
As part of the commemorations taking place for Diana’s 60th birthday this year, this new one-eighth sovereign coin carries an enigmatic profile portrait of the princess. Although she has been celebrated on other coins in the past, never before has her portrait featured on gold sovereigns. This means this coin is important not only because it celebrates Diana, but also because it is a world-first in the history of the sovereign series itself.
Each coin is struck in the highest possible Proof quality and is authorised by the Ascension Island, and approved by both the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Buckingham Palace.
