Description
King Charles III was the oldest heir apparent in British history when he acceded at the age of 73. His Coronation on the 6th of May 2023 was the first of its kind in virtually seventy years.
This Coronation of King Charles III British Coin & Stamp Set of 2023 brings together into one collector’s set the Definitive British coinage of the Coronation year, all with new designs for the new reign, along with two commemorative coins produced especially to commemorate that event.
ALL NEW COINS, FOR OUR NEW KING
The eight Definitive coins all feature new reverse designs, which focus on the conservation of Britain’s flora and fauna, a cause close to the king’s heart.
The coins in this set, dated 2023, are the very first of their kind, and they have a small privy mark – a Tudor Crown – on the obverse side behind the king’s head. This mark will only ever appear on these first coins of 2023. None of these coins were produced for circulation.
CORONATION COMMEMORATIVE COINS
The two commemorative coins, a crown-sized (38.6mm) five pound face value coin and a seven-sided fifty pence coin, are both one-year only designs produced specifically to mark the Coronation.
The large crown-sized five pound coin features objects of the Coronation Regalia used during the ceremony. These are among the most precious and sacred objects in the Crown Jewels.
The fifty pence coin features the main door of Westminster Abbey, the site of coronations since that of William the Conqueror in 1066.
Both coins feature a portrait of the king wearing a crown which is being used ONLY on celebratory coins for the coronation. By contrast, the eight Definitive coins feature the regular portrait of the king without a crown, but with the addition of a special ‘crown’ privy mark behind the king’s head.
THE FOUR COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS
Joining these ten coins is the complete set of four commemorative design stamps issued for the coronation, which have designs that embrace causes close to king’s heart.
Designs depict Britain’s cultural diversity, The Commonwealth and sustainability and biodiversity.
