This year we mark the 80th anniversary of V.E. Day, that incredible moment when peace returned to Britain and Europe after the dark years of World War Two. On 8th of May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared to a weary nation that hostilities had officially ended, and people spilled onto the streets in a spontaneous show of celebration and relief.
Now, a new solid 22 carat gold double sovereign coin with a unique colour has been specially struck to signify the peace brought about by V.E. Day. Gold sovereign coins almost always have a yellow colour – especially when minted in 22 carat (91.67%) purity. To mark this year’s 80th anniversary, this new coin has been produced using 22 carats of gold and 2 carats of palladium, creating coins with a subtle white hue in recognition of the peace brought by V.E. Day. Known as ‘Victory Gold’, this unique 22 carat gold alloy has never before been used in the minting of sovereign coins, making this double sovereign the first of its kind in the world.
This coin has immense appeal: just about every family up and down the country has someone whose bravery and courage they’d like to remember on this important V.E. day anniversary. This coin, with it’s rendition of the Dove of Peace by accomplished artist and designer Jody Clark, makes a lasting reminder of those who are still with us, and those who are now lost.
By bringing together not just one, but two precious metals in the minting of this coin, those who defended our nation in World War Two are commemorated unlike ever before.
The Dove of Peace – a symbol of hope used on a sovereign coin for the very first time
For this year’s important V.E. Day commemorations, the Dove of Peace has been chosen to represent the joy of a nation released from the tyranny of war. This global symbol of hope has been crafted by talented designer Jody Clark, whose portrait of His Majesty King Charles III appears on the reverse of these coins. The Dove of Peace featured on a commemorative British £2 coin for the 50th anniversary of V.E. Day thirty years ago (in 1995) but this is the first time that it has ever been seen on a sovereign coin.
Authorised by Tristan Da Cunha and approved by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Buckingham Palace, it is a wonderful commemoration of those who defended our nation.
