Hattons of London – A Big Christmas Thank You

thank you

We’d like to look back at the Hattons of London 2021 ranges, as well as sharing a monumental thank you to all of our clients; new and old. Whether you have started your coin collection in 2021, or have been adding to it for a while, we thank you for being a valued Hattons of London client.

The 2021 Ranges

The 2021 George and the Dragon 200th Anniversary Gold Sovereign Range – This was the first range of 2021, reaching a complete sell-out. In 2021, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the iconic Benedetto Pistrucci George and the Dragon design, we saw an exciting new interpretation by artist Jody Clark.

Benedetto Pistrucci’s classical rendition of St George slaying the dragon was first used on British gold sovereigns in 1817, and although the design has graced gold sovereigns for 200 years, not since Pistrucci has the same designer created both the monarch’s portrait and the St George and the dragon design – until now. In 2021, Jody Clark became the first, making this range of great interest to collectors.

The 2021 Queen’s 95th Birthday 24 Carat Gold Sovereign Range – Queen Elizabeth II is not only Britain’s longest reigning monarch, but also the oldest reigning monarch. This year marked the 95th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen, and to mark this incredible milestone, a new 24 carat gold sovereign range as minted – an astonishing 99.99% pure.

For the first time since 1839, a new version of the iconic Una and the Lion appears on a gold sovereign range, now featuring The Queen as Una. This beautiful design is by artist Jody Clark, and is also the first time the Queen has appeared on both sides of a coin in portraits by the same designer.

The 2021 HRH Prince Philip Tribute Gold Sovereign Range – On 17th April 2021, the nation paused to remember the life and service of Prince Philip as he was laid to rest at St George’s Chapel. As the longest-serving consort in British history, Prince Philip supported his wife, The Queen, and shaped himself as a selfless figure of Great Britain. Prince Philip was due to celebrate his 100th birthday on the 10th of June this year, but he sadly passed away just two months before this milestone birthday.

However, a new gold quarter sovereign, that was originally proposed to mark that birthday, was approved and released as a tribute to the life and service of the Duke of Edinburgh. The quarter sovereign featured Prince Philip’s Royal Arms and was the first time they have appeared as the main motif on gold sovereign coins.

The 2021 Diana 60th Birthday Gold Sovereign Range – This year would have marked the 60th birthday of Princess Diana, the ‘People’s Princess’, and to commemorate this a new sovereign range was minted. The new 22 carat gold sovereign range featured the portrait of Diana on the reverse side in a demure pose, for the first time ever, as the Princess has never before appeared on gold sovereign coins.

The 2021 50th Anniversary of Decimalisation Gold Sovereign Range – This year marked the 50th anniversary of Decimalisation in Britain, the biggest single change to our currency in over 1,000 years. To celebrate this, a new world’s first seven-sided gold sovereign range was created featuring iconic pre-decimal coin motifs, alongside decimal designs.

The one-eighth sovereign featured the Portcullis from the pre-decimal threepence and Britannia from the decimal fifty pence, in a design by talented artist Matt Dent.

The 2021 We Will Remember Them Gold Sovereign Range – The final range of 2021, released to pay tribute to the ordinary ranks of the British armed forces involved in the Second World War. The new 22 carat gold sovereign range features designs depicting objects of war, to represent the different armed divisions.

The 22 carat gold one-eighth sovereign depicts the profile image of a section of the main motif from the 1939-45 War medal to represent all who served. And, 10% of all net profits on sales of this range will be paid in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.
