Description

In 2026, two remarkable royal anniversaries coincide. 125 years have passed since the death of Queen Victoria the monarch whose reign transformed Britain and who gave her name to an age. In April, we marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Queen Elizabeth II, whose seventy-year reign simultaneously navigated profound global change and provided much-needed stability. Together, Queen Victoria and her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II account for more than 133 years on the throne, making them Britain’s longest-reigning monarchs. Two queens presiding over two defining eras of British history.

To commemorate these twin anniversaries, a remarkable new series of 24 carat gold sovereign coins has been produced. The reverse of these coins bears beautifully executed portraits of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II, brought together in a distinctive ‘Gothic style’ by the distinguished coin artist Jody Clark.  Inspired by some of the most celebrated coin designs in Britain’s coinage history, the design echoes the renowned Gothic Crown of 1847 and the Gothic Florin of 1849-87, pairing elegant royal portraiture with the richly decorative Gothic-script lettering that collectors have admired for generations.

This is the first series of gold sovereigns ever to depict Britain’s two longest reigning monarchs together in this way.

This special anniversary release is likely to resonate with anyone who admires the British monarchy. Both queens occupied a unique place in the affections of the nation, and both became symbols of continuity during periods of immense social, political and technological change. Their combined reigns spanned the years from 1837 to 2022, touching the lives of countless generations and helping to shape the Britain we know today.

All coins are minted in 24 carat gold.  Here’s a snapshot of the benefits:

  • World first: This is the first series of gold sovereign coins ever to depict Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II together in a Gothic-inspired design. Britain’s two longest-reigning monarchs, unified in a way never before seen on a sovereign issue.
  • Inspired by legendary coinage: The design pays tribute to the Gothic Crown and Gothic Florin, two of the most admired and celebrated coins in Britain’s coinage history. Their influence can be seen in both the portraiture and the distinctive Gothic lettering.
  • Pure 24 carat gold: These coins have been produced in the highest purity gold possible – 24 carat -an astonishing 99.99% pure!
  • Two major royal anniversaries in one year: The 125th Anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria and the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Queen
  • Superb portraits by the same artist but each coin with a unique design: The portraits of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II are the work of Jody Clark, one of Britain’s most accomplished coin designers and creator of the final coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

To understand why these coins have been produced in pure 24 carat gold, consider the remarkable coincidence of the anniversaries they commemorate: in 2026 our nation marks BOTH the 125th Anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria AND the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Queen Elizabeth II. Rarely do two such important milestones align so perfectly. If they have been buying sovereign coins for any period of time, they’ll know they are rarely minted in anything other than 22 carat gold. It takes an event of considerable importance to occasion them being minted in 24 carat purity.

For example, in the last decade there have been sovereign coins minted from 24 carat gold for Queen Elizabeth II’s 95th Birthday in 2021, the bicentenary of Queen Victoria’s birth in 2019, and a series celebrating Churchill and others amongst the Greatest Britons in 2024. The reason is that the sovereign as a coin, has historically been minted in 22 carat gold. The step up to 24 carat gold, which is 99.99%purity, needs to be highly justified

Two monarchs who helped define the modern monarchy in distinctive gothic’ style

The Victorian Age and the Elizabethan Age stand as great pillars of our national story. Few monarchs have left a deeper mark on Britain’s history than Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. Although separated by more thana century, their reigns share remarkable similarities. Both came to the throne as young women. Both witnessed periods of extraordinary technological, social and political change, and both became symbols of continuity when the world around them was transforming at unprecedented speed.

The ongoing appeal of these two remarkable monarchs, the historical significance of the ‘Gothic style’ and the convergence of two landmark anniversaries in 2026 combine to make these coins especially desirable.

Authorised by Tristan Da Cunha and approved by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Buckingham Palace, it is a wonderful way to celebrate our longest reigning monarchs.
