The world’s first eleven-sided gold quarter sovereign coin, in tribute to Apollo 11’s historic moon landing – The 2019 Moon Landing 50th Anniversary Gold Quarter Sovereign featuring the Apollo 11 Mission Patch (used with permission of NASA).
Neil Armstrong’s first step on the Moon in 1969 was one of the greatest moments in the history of mankind. A fifth of the world’s population watched in awe as humans walked on another world for the very first time. It’s hard to think of an event that has captivated the public imagination in the same way in the 50 years since.
In July 2019, the world will mark the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, and as part of the celebrations an exceptional gold coin has been minted. In tribute to the Apollo 11 mission, the world’s first eleven-sided quarter sovereign has been created.
Now, I may hear you ask why gold sovereign coins would be produced for what appears to be a US celebration? Well, firstly, this was an event of global significance – one of the greatest human ventures of exploration and discovery. Many people today remember where they were, when the pictures were beamed to earth of the first steps on the moon. and so a commemorative sovereign is well and truly deserved.
However, there is a deeper significance, for Britain, and one that we must not allow to be forgotten: this was anything BUT a solo achievement. In fact, when President John F Kennedy said “..we choose to go to the moon,… not because it is easy, but because it is hard”, the US had only just that year put a man into orbit. Putting a man on the moon, and bringing him home, in under a decade required just about every specialist engineer and technician NASA could lay their hands on – and dozens of them were British.
It’s safe to say that without the contribution of all these British scientists the moon landing wouldn’t have happened, making this celebration as much about their contribution as the event itself. This is why these new sovereign coins have been produced, and to honour the Apollo 11 moon landing, The 2019 Moon Landing 50th Anniversary Gold Quarter Sovereign has been struck with 11 sides – the first time ever this has been done!
Never before has a quarter sovereign coin with 11 sides been struck. Authorised by The East Caribbean States and minted in Britain it is a superb tribute to the moon landing.
